Tim Walz Accused of Lying About His ‘White Guy Tacos’

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has been accused on social media of lying about eating “white guy tacos” that consist of “ground beef and cheese” after a recipe he provided in 2022 resurfaced, showing diced green chilies and a bottle of taco sauce on the ingredients list.
Walz made the “white guy tacos” comment in a 10-minute discussion with Vice President Kamala Harris that was published on YouTube on Thursday. It has already racked up more than 1 million views. The informal conversation, which took the style of a fireside chat between Harris and Walz, the Democratic Party’s presidential and vice presidential nominees, respectively, covered a range of topics, including politics, music and food.
On X, formerly Twitter, Walz uploaded a 30-second promotional clip of the discussion that has received more than 4 million views and thousands of comments, with a number of social media users noting that in a January 2022 X post, Walz shared the recipe for his Turkey Taco Tot Hotdish, which won the Minnesota congressional delegation’s 2016 hotdish competition.
One user wrote: “Why did Walz lie about eating ‘white guy tacos’?? Just two years ago he was talking about his award-winning taco recipe. Loaded with seasoning!”
Earlier this month, Harris announced Walz as her 2024 running mate, sparking a surge in interest about the governor’s politics and personality. Since becoming her party’s presumptive candidate, Harris has polled strongly against Republican rival Donald Trump, with an Emerson College survey published on Thursday giving her a 4-point lead.
In the video of her chat with Walz, the governor says, “I have white guy tacos,” to which Harris responds: “What does that mean? Like, mayonnaise and tuna? What are you doing?”
Walz says, “Pretty much ground beef and cheese.” The vice president replies: “That’s OK. Do you put any flavor in it.” When the governor says no, Harris bursts into laughter.
Walz adds, “No, they said to be careful and let her know that black pepper is the top of the spice level in Minnesota, you know.”
Harris then says, “I’m the first vice president, I believe, who has ever grown chili peppers.”
Newsweek contacted Walz’s press office and the Harris campaign for comment via email outside regular office hours.
In his 2022 post, Walz published a photograph of his 2016 “Hotdish Off” award, writing: “I don’t know, people… I make a pretty mean hotdish. Check out my award-winning recipe for Turkey Taco Tot Hotdish here.”
A link included in the post led to a 2016 article published by The Journal in Minnesota, which listed Walz’s winning recipe. Among the ingredients were “1 can diced mild green chilies,” “1 bottle taco sauce (medium)” and “chili powder.”
“Tim Waltz is a d**n liar. If I were still a Minnesotan I’d be absolutely embarrassed,” an X user commented. “Attached beneath this post is Tim’s Hot Dish, which is very seasoned. The guy is a Pathological Liar.”
Another added: “Hmm so Tim is lying he isn’t just another ‘mayonnaise wypipo DoN’t LiKe SpIcEs’ racist trope. (btw who in the hell puts tots in their tacos? That alone should get him permanently uninvited.)”
In another post, the user wrote: “What a way to push the ‘white people are bland’ narrative. Keep that racism alive Tim! Continue the ‘I’m just a pathetic white person’ weak groveling simp boy attitude. You’re pathetic.”
